Protect
Your Original Web Site Text
and Graphics Against Theft.
WHY
PROTECT YOUR WEB SITE CONTENT.
Your original creations take a lot of hard work, time, and money
- regardless of whether they are Web Sites, Reports, Books, Software, Music, Poems, Sketches, Cartoons, Icons, Pictures,
etc. Thieves can and routinely do hijack others' work and
use it - for
free.
Theft of original
creations is easy. On the Internet, thieves have simple ways of
illegally using your creations without even actually having them in their
possession - and they can make you pay for delivering the stolen work to
their customers! New technology collided, head-on, with
old laws.
Technically, you have a copyright on your work, the moment you create
it.
To enforce this, you could officially register each one of
your works, hire an attorney (at $200 - $400 per hour), and sue for damages.
You might even recover a little money - maybe.
But, it's risky, time-consuming, expensive, and usually impractical.
(Remember the difficulty the huge music industry had with enforcing their
copyrights?
What chance do you have?)

graphics, less useable. These techniques, applicable to direct copying and
illegal linking ("hot-linking"), are easily implemented.

FACTS
ABOUT STOPPING WEB CONTENT THEFT.
#1. YOU CAN
ONLY MAKE THEFT MORE DIFFICULT.
Anyone can
copy almost anything from the Internet if they have access to a Web
browser and Internet access. (Anyone who tells you differently is a
charlatan.) You can, however, make it much more difficult to copy your original works
and make a stolen copy less
usable for thieves.
To determine what to steal,
thieves decide if:
- Your Creation is
EASIER to STEAL Than Others,
- The
Payoff is WORTH the EFFORT
to Steal it, and
- The CHANCES of
GETTING CAUGHT
are High or Low.
T-21 helps you in
all three cases,
by providing:
Registration
of your work as a proof of ownership; Techniques,
making theft more difficult and the stolen images less
usable; and Enforcement
Assistance in
removing stolen content from illegal use.

#2. WEB SITE "COPY-PROTECTION" SCHEMES
DON'T WORK.
Anyone, with
no more than a beginner's knowledge of the Internet and a little effort, can subvert any existing
theft-prevention system.
(Even beginners can join online
groups, instructing them - for free - in the art of beating protection
schemes.) Pseudo-protection
schemes, such as "No Right-Click" and others, make copying
just a little more difficult; that's all.
"Why is
it like this?" The short answer
is: If someone can see something on their monitor - it exists
on their computer and can be copied. There's always
a way. T-21's
Prevention Techniques make graphics theft more
difficult and a stolen product less usable. These
methods also immediately stop illegal linking of images ("hot-linking")
from a thief's Web Site to your Web Site. T-21
Provides Low-Cost Help.

#3. SELF-REGISTRATION DOESN'T WORK.
You must prove your
ownership to press your rights; but
ownership
authentication that you generate will be disputed - since you have a
direct interest in the issue. Technically, in the USA, you have an automatic copyright to any work you create - at the moment you
create it. But this, by itself, doesn't mean much:
-
YOUR
WORD AGAINST THEIRS.
If
you try to stop
illegal use of your original works, using only your personal documentation -
you will encounter problems. (For example, if you kept a log of your creations, a thief's response might be to produce a similar log, claiming yours is the
fake one.)
The result is a stalemate; No Resolution.
-
SEND
YOURSELF A REGISTERED COPY OF YOUR WORK.
This is an old, moderately expensive, mostly ineffective, measure. In the
world of electronic communications, it's almost impossible to prove to someone, distant from you (a Web
Host, for example), that you possess an envelope with specific contents in
it. Consider:
-
If you send the
original sealed envelope,
the recipient will open it and your
'sealed' proof is lost and out of your possession. Ineffective.
-
If you
break the seal on the Registered envelope - it's
worthless; someone can claim that you falsified what was in
it. Wasted effort.
-
If
you had sworn, notarized statements of witnesses (who
are not friends or relatives), attesting to exactly what, in
detail, was in the envelope, it would be a basis for proof - but they'd have to attest to exact details
later. Cumbersome, unworkable.

#4.
REGISTRATION of YOUR WEB SITE CONTENT.
In the USA, anyone can sue anyone else for almost anything.
It may be costly and they may not prevail - but they can sue.
Do you really want to get into that?
- Official
Registration
of an original work provides you with:
- Proof for Your Claim of
Ownership,
- The right to sue for
royalty fees and punitive damages.
- T-21's Original Works Registration
provides you with:
- An Inexpensive,
Effective, Flexible Registration,
- Proof needed
to legally remove your work
from illegal use. (You might collect royalty
fees but no damage awards.)
Officially register
-or- pursue an inexpensive route with
T-21?
We
recommend:
-
Lower-Value
Works. For
low-volume, relatively low-cost e-Books, Reports, Software, Poetry, Images, and Pictures -
T-21's services are far more cost-effective.
(For example, since Web Sites change frequently, T-21
can periodically capture a Web Site's content and Register
it for you, automatically.)
-
High-Value
Works.
For works that are Static (unchanging), High-Value,
and Widely-Distributed - it's usually advisable to pursue official
registration (e.g. - Bound Books, Movies, some High Value Software, and Popular
Music).
T-21
Registration is Easier,
Cheaper,
and More
Flexible.
